Robert Horn's perspectives... (though his essays don't seem to follow his own guidelines...) This seems particular appropriate to Wiki and OutLining, plus other forms of HyperText. But note that his focus/Context is on relatively "stable" information, as opposed to the process of Writing/thinking collaboratively. (more)

Emacs /ˈiːmæks/ and its derivatives are a family of text editors that are characterized by their extensibility. The manual for the most widely used variant, GNU Emacs, describes it as "the extensible, customizable, self-documenting, real-time display editor".[1] Development of the first Emacs began in the mid-1970s and continues actively as of 2015. Emacs has over 2,000 built-in commands and allows the user to combine these commands into macros to automate work. Emacs Lisp provides a deep extension capability allowing users and developers to write new commands using a dialect of the Lisp programming language. The original EMACS was written in 1976 by Richard Stallman and Guy Steele, Jr. as a set of Editor macros for the TECO editor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emacs (more)

Scott Alexander: Book Review: The Cult Of Smart. Socialist blogger Fredrik DeBoer is the opposite: few allies, but deeply respected by his enemies. I disagree with him about everything, so naturally I am a big fan of his work - which meant I was happy to read his latest book, The Cult Of Smart. (more)

Scott Alexander: A Modest Proposal For Republicans: Use The Word "Class". Pivot from mindless populist rage to a thoughtful campaign to fight classism. (more)

Scott Alexander: Book Review: Paul Fussell On Class (a 1983 book). He believes America has one of the most hypertrophied class systems in the world, that its formal equality has left a niche that an informal class system expanded to fill - and expanded, and expanded, until it surpassed the more-legible systems of Europe and became its own sort of homegrown monstrosity. He says he prefers the term "caste system". (more)

In epistemology, and more specifically, the sociology of knowledge, reflexivity refers to circular relationships between cause and effect, especially as embedded in human belief structures. A reflexive relationship is bidirectional with both the cause and the effect affecting one another in a relationship in which neither can be assigned as causes or effects. (more)

Daniel Markovits: How Life Became an Endless, Terrible Competition. Two decades ago, when I started writing about economic inequality, meritocracy seemed more likely a cure than a cause... In practice, however, meritocracy now excludes everyone outside of a narrow elite. See Alternatives To A College Degree. (more)

One doctor’s campaign to stop a covid-19 vaccine being rushed through before Election Day. Topol, who works at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla and is one of the country’s most prominent doctors, aimed to prevent Trump from greenlighting a vaccine before scientists could prove it to be safe and effective. To Topol, developing an effective vaccine against covid-19 is “the biggest event in our generation” and one that should be evaluated on the basis of scientific data, not political implications. Bryce Roberts: The End of Indie.vc. 6 years ago... The site went on to propose an experiment that included a new investment structure and a community of like-minded founders. (more)

Indie.vc is a 12 month program designed to fund and support founders on a path to profitability. We believe deeply that there are hundreds, even thousands, of businesses that could be thriving, at scale, if they focused on revenue growth over raising another round of funding. On average, the companies we've backed have increased revenues over 100% in the first 12 months of the program and around 300% after 24 months post-investment. We aim to be the last investment our founders NEED to take. We call this Permissionless Entrepreneurship. http://www.indie.vc (StartUp)
